Description
Tuscany is one of Italy's classic wine regions. The region is known for its rolling hills, historic towns, vineyards surrounded by olive trees and cypress trees, and a wine culture where tradition and refinement are closely connected.
The most important grape in Tuscany is Sangiovese. It produces wines with lively acidity, red fruit, spice and structure. This makes many Tuscan wines particularly food-friendly: they combine well with dishes that have depth, savoury character or seasoning, while retaining elegance.
Within Tuscany, the differences between areas are significant. Chianti and Chianti Classico often produce fresh, energetic and gastronomic wines. Montalcino is known for Brunello di Montalcino, a more powerful and age-worthy style. Montepulciano produces Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, often elegant, spicy and balanced. Along the coast, especially around Bolgheri and the Maremma, international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah also play an important role.
Tuscany is therefore not a single style, but a collection of wine areas with a clear identity: warmth, landscape, Sangiovese, structure and food. From approachable Chianti to serious cellar-worthy wines and modern coastal blends, Tuscany remains one of Italy's most compelling wine regions.
Region at a glance
- Climate
- Mainly Mediterranean, with warm summers, many hours of sunshine and relatively mild winters. Altitude, distance from the coast and local wind exposure create clear differences between the various wine areas.
- Terroir
- Hillside vineyards with varied soils, including limestone, clay, marl, sandstone and stony soils. In classic zones, altitude, drainage and poor soils often help produce concentrated grapes with freshness and structure.
- Key grapes
- Sangiovese is the most important grape in Tuscany. Other varieties include Canaiolo, Colorino, Trebbiano, Vermentino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.
- Wine styles
- Fresh and elegant red wines, structured Chianti styles, powerful age-worthy wines from Montalcino and Montepulciano, modern coastal blends, white wines from Vermentino and Vernaccia, and some classic dessert wines.
- Food pairing
- Tuscan wines pair well with pasta with ragù, bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled meat, game, mushrooms, stews, pecorino and other aged cheeses.
